Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
