Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently wager against one another. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
