Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he liked participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
